How Well Do You Listen?

Dear Uncommon Leaders,

I hope you are having a great start to this new month! Be uncommon in your life and leadership this week!

Your Sunday Nugget

This Week's Question:

How well do you listen as a leader?

This Week's Challenge:

The best leaders of people are usually good listeners. If I’m honest, this skill is one I have had to work on. I can get so focused on what I want or need to do that I won’t take the time to slow down and really listen to those around me.

I remember a conversation I had a few years back with my wife. She was talking to me but I had my laptop open and was “multi-tasking.” She said, “You know a good listener listens with their eyes and ears." I promptly closed my laptop, made eye contact and tuned in to what she was saying.

I’ve tried to remember that lesson. With all of the technology and distractions around us, it is easy to partially listen to people. When we listen well, we learn. When we listen well, we demonstrate care.

This week, your challenge is to really tune in to conversations with others and listen well. Make sure the other person knows you are paying attention and really hearing them. You just might learn something helpful.

This Week's Quote to Ponder:

"One of the most sincere forms of respect is actually listening to what another has to say." Bryant H. McGill
