This Week's Question:
Why does my appearance as a leader matter?
This Week's Challenge:
As leaders, if we are to set an example for others, make positive impressions and even give our customers confidence in our leadership, then our appearance matters. It is communicating something.
This week, your challenge is to tune in to your own appearance and evaluate how you’re showing up. Are there adjustments you may need to make?
I know this can be a sensitive topic and there is so much variety in what is acceptable appearance based on your role and company. However, here are a few things you might want to check:
Attire: Does what I wear match what I and my company want to project? Is it clean? Is it pressed? Do I overdress for my role? Do I underdress for my role?
Grooming: Does my personal grooming project professionalism?
Accessories: Are my keys or other accessories a hindrance to projecting professionalism?
A best practice: Have someone take some pictures of you and your team in action at work. Have them send you the photos and evaluate your appearance. Do you look professional or does it look like operations have beat you up a bit? Remember, your appearance is communicating something. Take account and try making some adjustments as necessary.
