Are You Ready For The Whirlwind?

This Week's Question:

Are you ready for the whirlwind that will come?

This Week's Challenge: 

One thing I can promise any leader, producer or achiever: a whirlwind will come for you. Sometimes it's brief and intense. Sometimes it lingers.

The past 10 days have been that for me — events, opportunities and problems across each of my companies, all wrapped up in travel, limited sleep and a lot of impact (and even some fun). Some weeks it all comes at once.

I think I'm on the other side of it today. But who knows what this week will bring? :)

Here's what I do know: we need to be ready for life's whirlwinds.

Looking back, three things helped me through this one:

1. Other people. My team was in it with me. They stepped up, picked up tasks, and rose to the occasion. It helps to be surrounded by people who don't run from the storm — they jump in it with you.

2. Recharge "snacks." I didn't have time this week for the things that fully recharge me — full workouts, walks alone, reading. But I grabbed short shots of it anyway: a late-night workout in a hotel gym when I couldn't sleep, three minutes of an audiobook. Even three minutes gave me a boost.

3. Remembering the vision. What we tell ourselves in the whirlwind matters. I reminded myself we're doing important work — impacting people, growing a business that provides jobs for people I genuinely care about. Tackling the whirlwind with others in mind makes it easier to carry.

Your challenge this week:

Think about — maybe even write down — the things that help you in a whirlwind. It's coming. It might even be this week.

Progress often comes from how we tackle the storm, not from avoiding it.
