Live from Camino...Stepping Up in Leadership

Dear Uncommon Leaders,

We are still on the Camino and I'm bringing you lessons and experiences in real-time from our journey.

I hope you had a great week and weekend and feel inspired for the week ahead. Remember Leaders, there are always opportunities to be uncommon! 👊💪

This Week's Question:

Who steps up on your team?

This Week's Challenge:

This week, my team and I are taking 10 clients on a week-long hike along the Camino de Santiago in Spain.

We’ll start by climbing over the Pyrenees before descending into Pamplona—home of the “running of the bulls.” It’s an incredible experience, but it’s also a big week with a lot of moving parts.

There are logistics to confirm, details to manage, and plenty of unknowns ahead. Challenges are part of the journey—that’s what makes it meaningful.

But here’s what I know:

“Next man up” is a phrase often used in sports. When a player gets hurt, gets sick, or can’t perform, someone else has to step in and keep things moving.

Great teams understand this. Great leaders model it.

This past week, I’ve been leading a group on the Camino. We’ve faced challenges, experienced thrills, and felt just about every emotion along the way.

At one point, I got sick for a day and was slowed down by a few blisters. It distracted me from leading at the level I wanted to.

But something encouraging happened.

My business partner Reese stepped up.

A longtime client Brandon stepped up.

Others stepped in and helped keep the group moving forward.

That’s what healthy leadership looks like.

It doesn’t always wait for a title.

It doesn’t need permission.

It sees a need and serves.

The strongest teams are not dependent on one person carrying everything. They are filled with people willing to step in when needed.

Your challenge this week:

Look for opportunities to step up for someone else.

And if you’re the one needing help right now, be humble enough to let someone else step in.

Sometimes leadership looks like leading.

Sometimes leadership looks like allowing others to lead.

I’m grateful I got to spend this week around people who did exactly that. 💪👊

Have a great week. Let’s go be Uncommon.

This Week's Quote to Ponder:

“The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team.” Phil Jackson
