What Are You Chasing?
Dear Uncommon Leaders,
How's your summer going? We hope you're getting some times of refreshing in as you continue to move towards your goals.
Be intentional this week about what you are chasing in life and leadership.
Have a great week!
This Week's Question:
What are you chasing?
This Week's Challenge:
Running has been a big part of my life over the past 20 years. I’ve probably run more than 100 races—from 5Ks to ultramarathons.
At the finish line of most of those races, I received a medal. Some of them are hanging in my office today.
They’re nice reminders.
But if I’m honest, they were never what I was really chasing.
I was chasing:
- Better fitness.
- Deeper friendships.
- Meaningful challenges.
- Lessons that would make me better.
A recent sermon caused me to ask myself a different question:
What am I chasing in my work?
Am I chasing another “medal”? Another achievement? Another milestone?
As I reflected on my career, I realized that any material gains pale in comparison to the relationships I’ve built, the people who’ve influenced me, and hopefully the influence I’ve had in their lives.
That’s what I want to chase.
Influence. Impact. Life change.
Of course, we all need to earn a living. We have bills to pay and families to provide for. There’s nothing wrong with pursuing financial security.
But beyond that…
What do you want to have to show for the thousands of hours you’ll invest in your work?
Your challenge this week:
Take a few minutes to think about what you’re really chasing.
Is it clear and compelling?
Is it worthy of the race you’re running?
Does it align with your faith or values?
Because what we chase ultimately shapes who we become.
Have a great week.
Let’s go be Uncommon.
