Keep Your Head Up... Opportunities Ahead

This Week's Question:

How many opportunities do you miss because your head is buried in your work?

This Week's Challenge: 

I've been working on some content lately around the mindset of the playmaker. The playmaker is the athlete on the field or the court who isn't just playing the game, they're leading the team within the game. They're the coach on the floor.

It took me back to high school basketball. I can still hear my coach yelling at me, more than once, Harrison, get your head up. I'd be dribbling the ball, with my head down. And here's the thing about dribbling with your head down: you miss the open man. You miss the defense coming at you. You simply cannot lead the floor when your eyes are on your feet.

Don't we do the exact same thing at work? Our faces and our minds get buried in whatever task is directly in front of us, and in the process we miss the chance to coach someone, to lead in the moment, to elevate a customer's experience, to encourage the person right next to us.

So here's your challenge this week:

Keep your head up. See the floor. Look for those small openings to lead, to move the ball forward, to make whatever operation you're part of just a little better. Do that, and who knows what opportunities you might find.
