Where Are You Headed?

Dear Uncommon Leaders, 

Happy August! As we welcome a new week and another new month, we're also enjoying the final stretch of summer — a season that reminds us to recharge, reflect, and embrace new possibilities. ☀️

Leaders, let's use this fresh beginning to refocus on our goals and make the most of the opportunities that lie ahead this month.

This Week's Question:

Have you drafted a map of where you're headed in life and leadership?

This Week's Challenge: 

Most of us wouldn't head out on a long journey without having some idea where we're going.

We'd look at a map. Choose a destination. Consider the route. And we'd probably make adjustments along the way.

But when it comes to our lives and leadership, often we just…go.

We work.

We lead.

We solve problems.

We stay busy.

And before we know it, another year has passed.

I've learned that I do better when I spend a little time even thinking about where I’m headed.

Then I make some notes and mark out milestones on paper. It doesn't have to be perfect, and I know the route will change. Life has taught me that plenty of things happen that aren't on the map!

But I still benefit from a direction.

Where do I want to grow?

Who do I want to become?

What relationships need my attention?

What do I want to accomplish?

What kind of impact do I want to have?

Your challenge this week:

Take a little time and draft a simple map for where you're headed. Just sketch a timeline on paper with goals, milestones, and a narrative of where you’d like to be as a leader and as a human.

Don't overcomplicate it. Think about the next couple of years, or even just the next few months.

Where are you now?

Where do you want to go?

What's one step that moves you in that direction?

We may not control every speed bump or roadblock, but we can be intentional about the direction we're traveling.

Common leaders often get consumed by the journey ahead; uncommon leaders prepare and follow a map.
